This could be the best decision you have ever made and certainly one of the biggest. It is one Chris has personally made 3 times in his long association with franchising.
These days we help Franchisors recruit franchisees and this means we know what to look for in a good franchisee.
Usually when we follow up an enquiry we ask why the person is interested in the particular franchise brand.
- Often the person will speak about the products or service, an affiliation they have with the brand , they like the brand and what it stands for – values and ethics meet their own values.
- They were attracted by an environmental angle or social enterprise affiliation etc.
- They see the benefits and the potential for a return on their investment and are keen to work hard at the business opportunity and can see value in the franchise package.
All of these are positive
However, more times than preferred, we will get a response like…
“I have asked about so many I don’t know what you do”
“I have no idea what the business is all about”
“No I haven’t done any research”
“I enquired because I just want to buy a business and franchising makes it easier”
For these enquiries our response is usually let’s leave the conversation at that.
Top Tip
If you are reading this because you are interested in buying into a franchise then really be interested in the brand – know what you can bring to the relationship and be able to sell yourself.
It is absolutely not a job interview but it is an interview.
The decision to invest or buy into a franchise, whichever terms suits you better, is an important decision and for the long term ideally.
Equally, the decision to accept a franchisee into a Franchise is an important one for the Franchisor.
Get it wrong and there is trouble ahead for all parties.
What should I consider when looking for an opportunity?
My Top 10
- Do you actually like the type of business and will enjoy it?
- Do you have some kind of affiliation for it, that does not mean experience?
- Do you meet the typical profile or skills required?
- Can you afford it?
- Will it deliver on your future expectations financially?
- Do you have the time to devote to running the business, is it full time or can it be run alongside a job or second business?
- Can you sell the business – will it have a value?
- Can you work with the Franchisor on a long term basis?
- Are you realistic in your expectations – it is rare for any business, Franchise or not to deliver massive returns in the early days, weeks or months.
- Is the territory suited to me available?
